Installation of the RAR

Choate Tactical Stock RAR and AccuShot PRS Monopod
Installation or a RAR (rear affixed rail) on a Choate Tactical Stock to allow for mounting picatinny rail mounted accessories such as a sling mount or a AccuShot PRM (precision rail mount) Monopod.
Before starting work on any firearm be sure that the firearm is clear. Do not touch the trigger until the firearm has been cleared. Inspect the chamber to ensure that it is clear of ammunition and that there is no ammunition positioned to be chambered. If possible remove the bolt from the rifle before starting work. Do not keep live ammunition near your work-space Once you have checked the firearm, check it again! And again!

The Choate Tactical has always been a great upgrade for any rifle. The one limitation of the stock is the lack of a rear sling attachment. The Choate Tactical stock does have a rear sling attachment however it in the middle of the stock. The location of the sling attachments for the Choate stocks is one of the features that Major John Plaster helped design. The premise is that many long range shooters remove the rear sling attachment because it tends to get in the way when shooting prone or when shooting from a bench. Secondly, when a sniper is crawling on his belly he will carry his rifle on top of his upper arm and/or across his back while holding the sling in his hand to steady the rifle and to keep it readily available. Major John Plaster believes that a side mounted sling helps the sniper with these tasks.
One of the issues that we’ve encountered is many people want to use a Karsten adjustable cheek piece with their Choate Tactical stock. To install an adjustable cheek rest the sling attachments must be removed and a sling is no longer an option without some creativity. The RAR solves this issue by providing a picatinny rail that can accept any rail mounted sling swivel.
A second reason one might want to install a rail on the bottom of their stock might be to add an attaching point for a rear monopod such as the AccuShot Precision Rail Mount or PRM.
The RAR is an aluminim 1913 Picatinny rail with 3 cross slots.
Installation is simple and can be done in less than 30-minutes with basic hand tools.
First step is to place the RAR on the bottom of the stock and drill the first pilot hole. The RAR has an arrow on the inside of the rail that points to the front of the rail. The RAR can be installed with arrow pointing toward the muzzle, front of the rifle, or toward rear of the rifle. With the RAR installed with the arrow pointing toward the front of the rifle the RAR will be slightly angled toward the front of the rifle. If using a rail mounted sling swivel the slight angle will support the natural installation of a sling.
To locate where the rail should be attached simply place the RAR on the bottom of the stock and mark your holes. It is suggested that you attach whatever accessory you plan to use on the rail to make sure it, along with the RAR, will have the necessary clearance before drilling holes in your stock.
The casting seam of the stock was used to center the RAR on the stock. Once the RAR is aligned and centered, mark your first hole. You can mark all four holes now as well.
In our example we marked the first hole, drilled the pilot hole, hand tightened the first screw and checked alignment and then marked and drilled the last hole. Our first pilot hole was a little off center so we drilled all pilot holes slightly left of the seam off center.
Once all pilot holes are drilled simply screw-in and tighten all four screws. Be careful not to over tighten the screws or you might strip out the hole in the stock. If this happens go to your local hardware store and purchase a slightly larger diameter screw. The RAR Kit’s screws can be replaced with similar diameter screws with a little more length if desired.
Project complete. Now simply attach your accessory to ensure clearance and final fit.
